Bethlehem Steel (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) recently installed a 55 watt/square foot TXLP cable system on one of its truck and rail scales, where customers truck in scrap steel to be weighed on a daily basis for reimbursement. Due to cold temperatures, snow and ice, the truck scale was “seizing”, delaying the trucks from leaving the weighing area – a major inconvenience for Bethlehem Steel’s customers. The company installed Nexans cables in the scale and around its perimeter. This kept the scales dry to prevent freezing, as well as at a more uniform temperature to minimize metal contraction and expansion. As a result, the scale now works all year long – no freezing, no seizing! And, because the 480-volt, three-phase design was compatible with the existing electrical service, Bethlehem Steel did not need to make an additional investment in new electrical equipment. Due to the project’s success, Orbit has since provided similar systems for truck scales throughout the United States.
